A Rhetorical Study of David's Speech and Prayer in 1 Chr28-29 The author employs Kennedy's rhetorical methodology to performa rhetorical analysis on David's speech and prayer in 1 Chr 28-29. In this study, the Chronicler’s rhetorical strategy and intentions are traced by exploring the rhetorical features of David's speech and prayer in a rhetorical unit of the David narrative (1 Chr 28-29). The Chroniclerclearly states that David is a faithful follower of God’s Word and an eager preparer for building the temple. But the Chronicler’s description of David goes beyond this image. The Chronicler, repeating David's covenant (1 Chr 17) and portraying David as a preparer of the building project, emphasizes the continuity of the covenantal relationship between God and the Yehudite community in the Persian era. In particular, the authorconsiderstwo layers of audience, in whichthenarrative audience is related to the narrative situation and the Chronicler’s audience is associated with the Yehudite community in the Persian period. Finally, the author evaluates the potential rhetorical effects of David's speech and prayer in the rhetorical unit. The author contends that the Chronicler’s persuasive portrayal of Davidthrough David’s speech and prayer in 1 Chr 28-29contributes to persuading the Yehudite community in the Persian era to recognize their identity, focusing on the Jerusalem temple and its worship. At the same time, the author maintains the covenantal relationship between God and the Yehudites is still valid in the Persian period. |
